Preventing Mold and Mildew

If you have problems with mold and mildew try to prevent its growth after painting or you may be required to repaint sooner than expected. Mildew can damage all paints and the surfaces it is growing on. A simple way to establish the presence of mold and mildew is to apply a few drops of chlorine bleach to the affected area. If it is present the discoloration will lighten and disappear after a few minutes.

This discoloration is a fungus that flourishes in warm and moist environments. And appears as a black, brown or gray discoloration that can be mistaken for dirt build up.

Mold and Mildew Prevention Strategies

The best way to control the growth of fungus is to prevent growth in the first place. A clean, dry, light filled environment discourages its formation. To make sure you have a properly ventilated bathroom contact a local contractor to perform a routine check.

Exterior Mold

To keep the exterior of your home mold and mildew free make sure all landscaping (shrubs, mulches, plantings and hanging tree limbs) away from your home to allow for good air circulation and sunlight. Maintain sprinkler systems and redirect sprinkler heads to keep the house dry, repair leaky gutters so rainwater is directed away from the foundation and wash the siding annually with a pressure washer and mild multi-purpose cleaner.

Interior Mold

To keep the inside of your home mold and mildew free install ceiling fans throughout your house and exhaust fans in the bathroom to promote air circulation. Use dehumidifiers in rooms that are prone to humid conditions and wash walls often with bleach and water
